When a patient complains of pain in their extremities, we almost always suggest that they visit their primary care physician first. We typically observe patients who report neck or low back pain over time and urge them to keep up a regular, healthy physical activity schedule to determine whether the discomfort resolves. If physical activity, over-the-counter medicines, or painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs do not alleviate the issue, the next step would be to see a doctor for an evaluation. Many patients with spinal problems can be treated without surgery. Physical therapy, at-home exercises, medication, and frequent spinal injections are recommended before considering surgery. Choosing surgery becomes an option if the problem is still not fixed. For instance, if a patient has severe neurogenic pain in the limbs and non-surgical therapy has not provided relief, surgical intervention is the suggested line of action. Doctors may suggest surgical surgery when non-surgical treatment is ineffective in treating symptoms brought on by spinal cord or nerve root compression, such as extreme weakness in an arm, leg, or limb.
