A joint, such as the hip, knee, shoulder, or elbow, is where two or more bones meet. Joint degeneration is the term used to describe the deterioration of joints over time. Although arthritis is the most frequent cause of joint deterioration, other factors like trauma, autoimmune diseases, and drugs can also harm joints. The procedure known as joint replacement surgery involves removing a diseased joint and replacing it with a new, albeit artificial, one. The most frequently replaced joints are the hips and knees, but the shoulders, elbows, ankles, and fingers are all replaceable joints. Artificial joint implants can be made of plastic, metal, or both. Sometimes a surgeon will replace the entire joint, which is referred to as a total joint replacement and other times a surgeon will opt to replace only the damaged parts of a joint, which is referred to as a partial joint replacement.
