A partial knee replacement is an alternative to total knee replacement for some patients with osteoarthritis of the knee when the damage is confined to a particular compartment of the knee. In the past, partial replacement of knees was reserved for elderly patients participating in a few sports. Now more patients are treated for partial knee replacement compared to a few years ago with new replacements and advanced surgical techniques. It is estimated that approximately 15 to 20 per cent of arthritic knee patients are eligible for partial knee replacement.
